SKU's and How to Use Them

What is a SKU?

A SKU is a unique code that tells the system what product and variation (if applicable) the customer ordered. Think of them as product ID numbers to:

  • Identify a product variant

  • Manage inventory

  • Encode product details such as color, size, type, and design

  • Ensure each product variant is uniquely tracked

  • Help find specific variants and identify popular products

For example, a large yellow Summer 2024 Ice Cream shirt might have the following SKU:

S24T-ICE-Y-L

Base SKUs

Podzilla allows for the use of a Base SKU. This is an identifying prefix for all your variant SKUs such as:

  • Your design name

  • Product line abbreviation

  • Color

  • Size

For example, if your product was a candle with a beach design and you entered BEACH as your Base SKU for three variants, your SKUs would become:

  • BEACH-AFT-TEA

  • BEACH-APP-HAR

  • BEACH-CIT-AGA

If you:

  • Want Podzilla to create a SKU for you, leave the Base SKU field blank. A SKU will be randomly created when you click Save at the end of the form.

  • Have your own SKU naming system and want to use a Base SKU for your item, enter it in the Base SKU field. Then click either the:

      • POPD button to add a hyphen and a randomly generated 8 character ID to the end of your base SKU. For example, D0093-AZO2D99A.

      • Variant button to add the Podzilla-designated ID to the end of your base SKU. For example, D0093-OR-CE03-RD-GB.

NOTE:  If the SKU is over 32 characters after you enter your base SKU, you can:
  • Click in the SKU box under each variant to edit the SKU or
  • Click either the PODP All or Variant All button so it assigns new shorter SKUs to your variations. Then you can copy and paste those shorter SKUs into your Etsy listing.

SKU Best Practices

  • Be Consistent. Use the same structure for all products. For example:

[DesignID]-[Product]-[Color]-[Size]

  • Keep Your SKUs Short. Etsy only allows 32 characters in the SKU field. Keeping them short also keeps them manageable.

  • Consider Using Letters. This will help differentiate your SKUs and prevent you from using the same SKU twice. Letters can also keep your SKUs short.

NOTE:  Avoid “I” and “O” because they can easily be mistaken for numbers.
  • Keep It Simple. Avoid special characters or spaces.

  • Make It Meaningful. BEACH-MUG-BLUE is better than PROD123.

  • Think Long Term. You can’t change a SKU in Podzilla after an order has been placed.

See How to Use SKU for Your Inventory for more information.

Can I use the SKU's from Printify on Podzilla?

Yes! The Import Order button on the My Products page lets you import an existing Etsy listing and match the SKU's to your Podzilla products. It will ask for the listing number which you can find by opening your listing in Etsy and copy the listing ID at the end of the URL:

https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/me/listing-editor/edit/1234567890

NOTE:  You must get this ID from inside the listing editor. It is different from the ID in the URL you give the customer.
IMPORTANT:  If you use automatic fulfillment on Printify, be sure to turn it off so your orders are not sent to production in both companies.
